It was built from the end of 1066 as part of the Norman conquest of England. The White Tower, which gives the entire castle its name, was built by William the Conqueror in 1078, and has been a symbol of the resentful oppression inflicted on London by the new rulers. The castle was used, from 1100, as a prison (Rainulf Flambard was the first to be imprisoned there) until 1952 with the imprisonment of the Kray twins, although this was never his its main purpose.
