The churches are filled with people as a solemn mass begins. At midnight, after the procession around the church, the priest opens the closed doors of the church, symbolising the moment when the tomb of Christ is opened, and declares to the believers that Christ has risen. In northern Russia, on Clean Thursday, juniper bushes are gathered and burned to protect houses and farmyards from disease. Easter is a time for giving and sharing. During the week after Easter, it is typical to set the table to welcome any guests, especially the poor and humble.

NORWAY

Norway has the longest Easter in the world. Traditionally, shops and workplaces are closed on Skjærtorsdag (Maundy Thursday), langfredag (Good Friday) and the Monday after Easter Sunday, known as andre påskedag, or the second day of Easter.

HISTORY NORWAY

The name Påske is derived from the Hebrew word 'Pesach / Pasah'. Passover, known as Påske in Norwegian, is an important holiday in Norway as it marks the arrival of spring after the long, dark winter.

TRADITIONS GERMANY

Bonfires (Osterfeuer) are a popular but lesser-known custom in Germany during this time of year. They originated from the tradition of clearing fields and orchards of dead plant matter to make way for crop growth. The Easter markets, known as Ostermärkte, are a popular activity for all ages. They offer a variety of items for sale, including decorated eggs, chocolate eggs and bunnies, spring decorations, tulip and daffodil bulbs, Easter handicrafts, and more.

Denmark

Parents in Denmark often play hide-and-seek with Easter eggs, providing a fun activity for children. As the children get closer to finding the eggs, parents may sing a traditional Danish Easter song, similar to the game 'cold, cold, hot, hot, hot'.

ALEMANIA

Almost everywhere in Germany it is traditional to light a bonfire at Easter. This pagan custom, which celebrates the arrival of spring, was adopted by Christians to represent the resurrection of Christ. In Hamburg, four large bonfires are lit on the banks of the River Elbe.

TYPICAL FOOD RUSIA

There are several traditional Easter dishes, including the 'Kulich' (Кули́ч), which is a sugar-coated cupcake. The abbreviation of the phrase 'Christ is risen' is often written on this type of cake.
