Iqbal and his courage
His job :
His buyer was a carpet manufacture and Iqbal was forced to work at a carpet loom, often chained, for 6 years.
The problem of his work
The malnutrition slowed hid growth and his back was curved after 12 hours sitting at the loom every day. He had respiratory problems because the carpet dust entered his lungs. He had to work very hard because his small fingers were perfect for making the smallest knots in the intricate designs on the carpets.
"Iqbal ,the heros for the children"
When he was ten he was released from his slavery by the Bonded Labor Liberation Front (BLLF),an organisation fouded in 1988 to combat bonded and child labour in Pakistan.
The liberty
The BLLF has freed 30,000 children and offers them education. Iqbal was very intelligent and learned quickly, becoming a spokesperson for Pakistan's 6 million child labourers. He spoke to children about their nights and helped to free 3,000.
His travels
He travelled to Europe and the USA to denounce bonded labour and ask for a boycott of Pakistani carpets, almost always made by bonded children.
His importance
Exports suffered and Iqbal became an international symbol for children's rights.
The threats
He was also an object of great irritation for the so-called "carpet mafia", and he received threats.
His horrible death
On April 16 1995, he was on holiday from school in his village near Lahore, riding his bicycle with friends, when he was shot.
His killers were never found, because the government was hostage to the "carpet mafia" and put profit before the life of a child.
In his memory
Many schools in Italy are also dedicated to Iqbal. in Africa one child in three works mainly in family farming and in very small businesses. In South America 15 - 20% of children under the age of 15 work and quite a few of them are also street children.
