Relgion of 1910´s Spain

Religion played a significant role in the day to day lives of the people of Sevilla. Majority of the population was Catholic = Many attended church. Religious processions were important cultural events that brought the community together. The clergy held significant influence in soctiety. Religious teachings and morals often shaped public attidutes and behaviours.

Virgin of the Valley

A rich soldier was sailing of the coast of Margarita Island in Venezuela. However, a violent storm suddenly arose, and in their desperation, the soldier prayed fervently to the Virgin Mary, seeking her protection and assistance. Miraculously, the storm subsided, grateful for this intervention, the soldier promised to build a chapel in honor of the Virgin of the Valley upon his safe return to land. True to his word, once he reached Margarita Island safely, he constructed a chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary. This chapel became a place of pilgrimage and devotion for locals, and over time, it grew into a significant religious site associated with the Virgen del Valle.

The story of the rich soldier's miraculous rescue and subsequent dedication to the Virgin Mary is often recounted as part of the lore surrounding the Virgen del Valle in Venezuela.

Description of the painting

The painting depicts a typical scene of Easter celebrations in Seville, the solemn processions of the Nazarenes during Holy Week. We can witness the Virgin of the valley being carried by a group of Capilotes. The vibrant hues of the virgin contrast against the deep shadows of the Capiolotes and the audience members, creating a sense of drama and intensity.
