SIMPLE MACHINES

INCLINED PLANES

Is the simplest of the simple machines. They are used to lift heavy objects to a greater height.

THE WHEEL AND AXLE

It involves two circular objects joined at the centre. The larger disc: wheel. The smaller cylindrical object: axel.

THE WEDGE

Is a triangular tool often made of metal, wood, stone or plastic. They were the first tools used by humans.

THE SCREW

Is an inclined plane around a cylinder. They are used to squeeze, lift or hold objects.

THE LEVER

Is a rigid bar or a beam that can pivot on a point of support called fulcrum. There are three lever classes.

THE PULLEY

Is a wheel with a groove in it. The groove helps to keep the rope in place. It is used to lift up or lower heavy objects
