Punctuating Direct Quotations

Here are some rules and examples:

Quotation Marks: Put all direct quotations in quotaiton marks. A direct quotation is when you use another writer's or speaker's exact words.

Commas: Remember to use a comma after the speaker tag and before the quotation.

Exclamation and Question Marks: When the direct quote is asking a question or making an exclaimation, these punctuation marks go inside the quotes.

Periods and Commas: Keep periods and commas inside the quotation marks.
