Per struttura portante di un edificio si intende l'insieme degli elementi strutturali (travi, pilastri, fondazioni, ecc.) atti a sostenere i carichi agenti (pesi propri degli elementi, carichi verticali, carichi orizzontali, ecc.) in modo che l'edificio stesso possa essere utilizzato garantendo le prestazioni attese e il livello di sicurezza previsto dalle norme vigenti.

I CARICHI SU UNA STRUTTURA

I carichi si suddividono in due categorie: permanenti e accidentali. Carichi permanenti sono gli elementi strutturali come i solai, setti isolamenti. I carichi accidentali sono carichi che si verificano come conseguenza diretta di un incidente o di circostanze eccezionali, come ad esempio collisioni, caduta di oggetti, esplosioni

STRUTTURA A TELAIO

Il telaio. E' una struttura rettangolare snella che copre una grande luce. E' formata da tre elementi di legno (oppure acciaio o cemento armato), dette pilastri (verticali) e trave (orizzontale), che sono collegati alle estremità e formano un sistema continuo.

DIFFERENZA TRA STRUTTURA PORTANTE E NON PORTANTE

Il muro portante è l'elemento strutturale di un edificio costruito con il sistema dei setti portanti. Si differenzia dal tramezzo, elemento divisorio interno e non portante, e dalla tamponatura, elemento che divide l'interno dall'esterno e che non porta peso. Fino all'avvento della tecnologia del cemento armato ed in genere del tipo strutturale a telaio, tutte le murature si potevano considerare portanti.
