Stolen Sisters Video

After viewing the video with your partner discuss the following questions:

• What was the total number of MMIW and kids in the USA?
• What surprised you about how much were logged by the US? Why?
• Why weren't most not logged? Do you think it is fair?
• Why do you think the US police or government not tell the truth of how these women or girls died?
• What is the author's end message for the viewer?

Raising Awareness

Individual Project: Choose one of the 3 choices to present what was learned from the lesson.

1. Go to the website linked here for more information pertaining to MMIW and raising awareness and standing up for social justice

After viewing the website, choose one project to display your understanding of developing empathy and respect for indigenous women and girls.

1. Art Project- create a visual representation of solidarity with MMIW.
2. Missing Women Quilt- cut out red squares or hand print and write a supporting message to show hope, respect, and remembrance of MMIW
3. Research- conduct a small research on other indigenous women and girls from around the world who fall vitcims to the same fate. Locate on world map, make statistical PIE chart, and other relevant information.

Definitions

Keep the words and definitions in mind as you interact with the lesson:

• Social Justice- are issues that often highlight inequality and injustices faced by specific groups
• Indigenous- aboriginal or native peoples are original people who inhabited a region before immigrants
• MMIW (murdered and missing indigenous women)- are women and or girls who have been taken and murdered
• Racism- the belief that people who belong to certain races are naturally inferior to others

• Bias- having a preference or favoring one thing over another

MMIW: What is MMIW

After viewing the two videos, you and your partner will join with another partner group and complete the following:

• Read and annotate the primary source on MMIW. Click on link:

• Complete a PIE Chart for the statistics on
• What type of abuse Indians faced
• The number of MMIW in 2019
• Create a listing of:
• What did boarding schools enact on indigenous kids? How many indigenous kids attend boarding schools?

• Develop empathy and respect for the experiences of Indigenous women and girls.
• Identify ways to raise awareness about the MMIW crisis and the importance of social justice.
