START

Sophie Scholl

Born in Germany on May 9, 1921, to Robert and Magdalena Scholl, Sophie Scholl lived a carefree childhood. At the age of 19 she graduated secondary school and went on to be a kindergarten teacher. Through many talks with her father, Sophie began to see the evil in the Nazi party. In 1942 Sophie joined an organization called the White Rose.

The White Rose

The White Rose was a resistance group in Germany set on passively resisting the Nazis. They did this by writing leaflets promoting the fact that the Nazis were not to be trusted. On February 18, 1943, Sophie, seeing leftover leaflets in a classroom, picked them up and flung them off a balcony into the crowd below. Unfortunately, this act was recorded by Jakob Schmid, one of many in the Nazi party. Sophie, her brother Hans, and a friend were taken into custody and were executed by guillotine just four days later.
