Australia's flag
Australia's national flag consists of a dark blue field and features three primary components which are the Commonwealth Star, the Southern Cross, and the Union Jack. . In the upper left corner, the Union Jack represents Australia's association with Great Britain (UK). . Directly below the Union Jack is a large seven-pointed star known as the white Commonwealth or Federation star. The star depicts one point for each of the six original states of Australia in 1901; and the seventh point, added to the stars in 1909, denotes all the internal and external territories of the Commonwealth of Australia. . On the right side is a representation of the Southern Cross constellation in white with one small five-pointed star and four larger, seven-pointed stars. The stars are a reminder of Australia's geographical location, as this constellation can only be seen from the southern hemisphere.

The Aboriginal peoples
Australia is made up of many different and distinct Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander groups, each with their own culture, language, beliefs and practices. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are the first peoples of Australia, meaning they were here for thousands of years prior to colonisation. There are varying estimates for how long Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have lived on this continent, however, upwards of 60,000 years is what current research reveals.

The Aboriginal flag
Meaning and origins
The Aboriginal flag was designed in 1971 by Luritja man Harold Thomas. Harold was a graduate of the South Australian School of Art. He was inspired to design one after attending a protest march in 1970. He was struck by the fact that Aboriginal people of Australia had no symbol of their own around which they could rally. His original design used ochre colours, but he opted with red, black and yellow which would be more striking at protests. The design is divided horizontally into halves. The top half is black and the lower half red. There is a yellow circle in the centre.
The colours are symbolic. The yellow circle in the middle represents the sun, the giver of all life. The red represents the earth and the spiritual relationship of Aborignal people with the land. It can also represent the blood of Indigenous people shed during resistance warfare. The black represents Aboriginal people.
