Aosta

Aosta Valley is the Italian region with the smallest number of inhabitants and the lowest density population; most of the inhabitants live in the capital, Aosta, and in the areas of lower valley. It is one of the five autonomous regions with special status. It has two official languages, Italian and French, but many inhabitants speak patois, a Franco-Provence dialect; in the Gressoney valley, however, there are groups of German origins, the Walser, who they speak Titsch, a dialect similar to German.

Others

In addition to the various archaeological sites in the region we can also find around 120 castles from different eras, starting from X century up to the XX century; Among these we can find the castle of Queen Margherita Di Savoia located in Gressoney-Saint-Jean at foot of Monte Rosa, which dates back to 1900. After Queen’s death in 1926, the castle was sold in 1981 to the Aosta Valley region.

The economy of the Aosta Valley is based above all on service industry sector, in particular on tourism. •Primary sector: About agriculture, it should be noted that approximately 35% of the cultivable land is unproductive for agricultural purpose. Despite this, in mountain areas, woods and pastures are used to encourage cattle breeding and the consequent dairy production. In the valleys there is a fair amount of agricultural activity with the cultivation of potatoes, fruit trees, various vegetables, cereals and vines. •Secondary sector: The industry employs approximately 33% of the region's active population, contributing to about a third of the total wealth produced. Industries are concentrated in the lower valley and are often small-medium dimensions. They are active in the textile, buildings construction, mechanical, wood and paper sectors. •Tertiary sector: For a century now, the Gran Paradiso national park has been the major attraction for the nature tourism in Valle d’Aosta. In the park you can come into contact with different species of fauna and flora. In addition to the park, tourism is highly developed especially in the alpinistic and skiing sectors.
