At 4:10 pm Japan Standard Time (07:10 GMT), the ground on the Noto Peninsula in northwestern Honshu began to shake, trembling violently for about 50 seconds. The main 7.5 magnitude quake was followed by dozens of strong aftershocks in the minutes, hours and days that followed.
The 1 January 2024 earthquake was the strongest to hit Ishikawa Prefecture since 1885 and mainland Japan since the 2011 Tohoku earthquake. The tremor was felt across much of Honshu, including Tokyo, located about 300 kilometres southeast of the quake's epicentre.
about 3,100 people remain isolated due to road damage, mainly in Wajima, while about 60,000 homes in Wajima and Suzu remain without water supply.

Some 45,700 households in central Japan's Ishikawa prefecture are without power after a 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck the area on Monday.
The quake left at least six people dead in Ishikawa and dozens injured in four other prefectures, including Toyama and Niigata.
At least 30,251 people in Ishikawa prefecture had taken refuge in evacuation centres by Tuesday morning.
