His career
His career was boosted by Paul Durand-Ruel but his economic situation was not getting any better.
In 1890 he developed the concept of "series" and began working in the garden of his home in Giverny. Between 1851 and 1857 he attended "LE HAVRE" high school but he didn't like the classes so he drew caricatures of his teachers. After high school, he enrolled in a private painting school in Switzerland where he deepened his study of figures. In 1861 he was called up for military service which lasted approximately 7 years. Thanks to typhoid fever and a payment of 3,000 francs, he got rid of the 6 years that remained.

Impressionism is an artistic style that emerged in France during the second half of the 19th century. It is characterized by its persistent experimentation with lighting, similar to luminism. The management of light is considered crucial to achieving beauty and balance.Impressionist paintings are constructed from broad spots of color, which act as points in a larger polychrome. Therefore, when viewing the canvases, it is necessary to take a certain distance so that the lights, shadows and figures appear.
The appearance of impressionism is related to a social change. During the late 18th century and the first half of the 19th century, significant transformations occurred, such as the industrial revolution, the French revolution, Napoleon's empire, the restoration of social movements, and bourgeois reforms. The rationalist philosophy of the Age of Enlightenment faded along with romanticism, leaving behind stylistics where feelings, imagination and passions governed the arts. Now, nationalist and socialist ideas led the collective.
In the second half of the 19th century there was economic growth in Europe. The increase in trade and technical progress led to the consolidation of the bourgeoisie. Social classes were reorganized and socialist leaders from all over Europe met to debate these changes. The philosophy at that time was positivist and realistic, where things were tested and the transformation of the world was demanded. Art changed with society.
Artistical Context
This movement received its name thanks to Monet for his work "Impression au soleil levant", which was shown in 1874 at an exhibition of young painters. This style is considered the first break in the process that would lead to modern art. At the beginning, paintings did not value landscapes or still lifes, impressionism introduced a variety of forms and the capture of everyday landscapes from different perspectives. The guidelines that define this trend include the movement of the landscape, the naturalness of the forms and purity.
His most important pieces and series
Monet was a painter who practiced the plenaryism. That's outdoor painting. Monet loved the way that the light acted on objects, which is why his pieces are very lively.

My Favourite Piece
My favorite work by Claude Monet is ''Impression au Soleil Levant'' this work was made in 1872. This piece is currently located in the Marmottan Monet Museum in Paris, France. I can consider this work as my favorite because it was the first work by Claude Monet that I saw and it caught my attention so much that I began to research more about his works and in general about his life. Another strong point was that by studying French and being a French-speaking painter, it was great for me to read his information in that language, and then reinforce the language.

1. Early Caricaturist: Before becoming a painter, Monet gained recognition as a caricaturist. By the age of 15, he was creating charcoal caricatures of locals in Le Havre, signing them as “O. Monet” (his first name is Oscar; Claude is his middle name). 2. Military Service and Art: Monet was drafted into military service and spent a year in Algeria. Despite having the means, his father declined to purchase an exemption from conscription. Monet served for a year until he contracted typhoid. His impressions of light and color during this time influenced his future artistic endeavors.
3. Japanese Influence: Monet was inspired by Japanese art. He collected Japanese Ukiyo-e woodblock prints and incorporated their ethos into his work. His fascination with Japanese culture is evident in pieces like “La Japonaise”. 4. Vision Challenges: In his later years, Monet’s vision weakened, but he continued to create remarkable art. 5. Depression: Monet struggled with depression throughout his life, yet he channeled his emotions into his art.

Claude Monet's illness
In 1908, the disease began in Monet's eyes and in 1912 his vision deteriorated and he was diagnosed with cataracts. But in 1923, he underwent two operations to restore his sight.
He was able to exhibit some of his first pieces in the Salon de France. His first pieces were realistic in style but at the end of the 60s he began to paint impressionist pieces, these pieces made him lose money.
