What happened in the 1900s?
In this period, a movement made up of women called "suffragettes" protested to obtain the right to vote, and also in this case we can see how they referred to the Magna Carta to claim their rights.
What did Nelson Mandela do in 1964?
Mandela declared his admiration for Magna Carta and for western democracy during his famous speech from the dock and he contrasted it with the oppressive south African regime.Even Ghandi, when he fought succesfully for greater freedom for the Indian settlers in South Africa, described the resulting document as "The Magna Carta of our liberty in this land".
What happened in 1600's?
The english lawyers uesd this important document to challeng King Charles I. He didn't listen the parliament and he did what he wanted. So, inspired by the Magna Carta Sir Edward Coke wrote the Petition of Rights, that limited the king's power.
What happened in the 1838?
In 1838, a movement of british mens belonging to the working class, the "Chartist", fought to obtain the right to vote. To reach their goal, they created the "Peoples Charta", taking inspiration from "Magna Carta".
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights
The declaration was written after the atrocities of W.W.2 and it states that people around the world are protected by fundamental human rights regardless of their race, gender citizenchip or beliefs.
When it was granted?
The Magna Carta was granted in 1215 and established that everyone, even the king, have to obey the law.
What happened in the 1800s?
During the 1800s Magna Carta was used to protest against the censorship of the press. At this time people could be imprisoned without trial for criticizing the king; so when John Wilkes was imprisoned for insulting king George III, he used Magna Carta to fight for his freedom. He campained by showing Magna Carta on everything from posters to teapots.
What appened in the American colony?
The american colonies based their own laws on Magna Carta. In 1770s, when they fighted for independence, Magna Carta became a symbol of American liberty and his principles where echoed in the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights.
When it was printed?
The Magna Carta was printed in 1508. When it was printed it became the first law that all English lawyers studied.Unfortunately not everyone understood its importance.
