General requirements:
1. The primary principle governing the transmission of French citizenship is 'jus sanguinis'. Under this principle, if you are born to a parent who held French nationality at the time of your birth, you automatically acquire French citizenship by operation of law, regardless of whether you or your ancestors were registered with the French authorities. 2. This principle applies to a chain of filiation. Therefore, in theory, one can assert French citizenship even if the French lineage extends back many generations and the individuals in question have not lived in France. 3. However, there is a 50-year window to register the citizenship that one has acquired automatically. This period begins from the 'establishment of the family abroad'. The count is reset whenever you or any of your ancestors in the French lineage establish residence in France or are treated by the French authorities as citizens. We can assist you in locating evidence of such instances. 4. Typically, any historical French passports, Livret de famille (family record book), consular registrations, ID cards, and official correspondence from the French authorities can be used to reset this count. Other documents may also serve as evidence in this regard. 5. After submission, this application normally takes between 8 months to 1,5 years to be processed.
