On April 25, 1990, the Hubble Space Telescope was placed into orbit. The large reflecting telescope was the most sophisticated optical observatory ever to orbit Earth, and the photographs it collected ultimately revolutionized the field of astronomy

Flight of the First Private Spacecraft

On June the 21st , 2004, SpaceShipOne, designed and developed by an aerospace development company, became the first private manned space vehicle to fly past the boundary of space. The vehicle was flown by South African-born American test pilot Mike Melvill, who became the first commercial astronaut-pilot.

Hello ! I am Anna from the 1st Gymnasium of Kalamaria, Greece.Welcome to our e-twinning project “ Space Journey”! Students from four countries that is, Poland, Romania , Turkey and Greece collaborate in this project. The aim of this presentation is for the students, to take the role of guide in our space. I hope you will find it interesting! Have a nice space journey!

First Man in Space

On April 12, 1961, the cosmonaut Yury A. Gagarin, onboard the Vostok 1 spacecraft , became the first human in space. The voyage lasted 1 hour and 29 minutes, with his safe return to Earth. It also brought Gagarin immediate worldwide fame. That day the era of humanity in space would start. Here is Gagarin’s words: “Through the window I see the Earth. The ground is clearly discernible. The earth is blue…How wonderful. It is amazing! I can see clouds over the land. Beautiful!…Feeling of weightlessness is interesting. Everything is floating"

A HISTORY OF SPACE FLIGHT DOCUMENTARY BY ROBERT REIF

Hello! I'm Antony from the 1st Gymnasium of Kalamaria, Greece. We, the students of our project " Space Journey" were separated in six mixed groups. Each group consists of students from all the participating countries and has a definite task to complete.

First Satellite in Space On October 4, 1957, The Sputnik 1 spacecraft was the first artificial satellite successfully placed in orbit around the Earth, signalling the Soviet’s technical leadership in the new field of space. The space race between the USA-Soviet or as it is called the Cold War begins… In addition to the first satellite, the Soviets launched the first animal into orbit. The Russian dog Laika ( 3 November 1957) flew aboard the Sputnik 2 spacecraft.

1975. Apollo-Soyuz: An Orbital Partnership Begins In July 1975 it was decided that the United States and the Soviet union would do a joint. Apolo-Soyuz was a great mission and it opened up the Iron Curtain. It was a great era. It was the beginning of their future cooperation. And also it was a demonstration to the whole world that two countries with different languages, different units of measurements, and greatly different political systems, could work together for a common goal

History of space exploration Since ancient times, people around the world have studied the heavens and used their observations and explanations of astronomical phenomena for both religious and practical purposes. Some dreamed of leaving Earth to explore other worlds. The French author Jules Verne in his story (From the Earth to the Moon) and the English novelist and historian H.G. Wells in his stories (The War of the Worlds ) and (The First Men in the Moon ) described space travel and encounters with alien beings. Physical space exploration began during the Second World War with Wernher Von Braun’s V-2 military rocket being the first man-made object to travel into space.

The Lunar Landing

IT WAS JULY 20, 1969. Millions of people watched on television as astronaut Neil Armstrong, the commander of Apollo 11, walked on the moon for the first time in history. The historic trip wasn't easy. After a lot of problems, Armstrong landed his lunar module, called the ‘Eagle', on the moon. There were two more astronauts with him, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins. They put on their spacesuits and Armstrong opened the door. He climbed out on a ladder. It had nine steps. Armstrong jumped the last step and his feet touched the moon. Some minutes later, Aldrin also climbed out of the ‘Eagle'. The two astronauts stayed about 3 hours on the moon. They collected rocks and planted the US flag. On July 24th the crew landed in the Pacific Ocean. Scientists studied the rocks from the moon and discovered that there was no life there. Armstrong called their mission the ‘beginning of a new age'. Did they do it again? No, they didn't. They stopped travelling into space. But that journey changed their life.
