Great, sounds like we're quite close to each other! Now, to get to know each other better, please look around and tell me, which building are you most interested in?
B. Cosin’s Library.
D. Palace Green (Grassland)
C. Almshouses.
A. Durham Castle.
Oh, sounds like I'd better introduce you to my location! Which following building are you interested in the most?
Nice choice. I was the home of the Bishops of Durham for almost 800 years, and have been a Durham University college since 1836. Do you know what year I was born?
A. 1072, in order to protect the Norman rulers from the rebellious locals and potential invasions from Scotland.
B. ....1720?
You chose a hidden gem. This library was built by book-loving Bishop John Cosin in 1669 as a public library. Me, the Castle, is even older - Can you guess what year construction on the castle began?
A. 1072, in order to protect the Norman rulers from the rebellious locals and potential invasions from Scotland.
B. ....1720?
Nice choice! This grassland is part of our UNESCO World Heritage Site. In 18th and 19th century it was a square where elegantly dressed couples would promenade and children would play. Do you know when it dates back to?
A. 1090s. When the Castle and the Cathedral was being constructed, it would have been a bustling centre of commercial activity.
B. ....1720?
Here's an interesting story for you. The Almshouses housed eight poor people who were given a room and allowance. Beneficiaries had to attend daily Cathedral services and avoid ‘taverns and alehouses’. If it were you, would you accept it?
A. Yes.
B. No.
You got the Achievement: ‘I know your age’

Interesting. Now you know I have a lot of stories. After all, I've been around since 1072. Since you're about to become part of my history, would you like to see some of my collection? Please forgive the vanity of an old spirit, especially one with a great treasure. Pick the one that interests you most -

F. I like fancy things.
B. What is this old looking book?
D. …bone maybe?
C. What's the deal with this coin?
Pick the one that interests you most.
A. I love this photo album.
E. Why do you collect these shells?
-You:
-The Castle: Aye, I have asked a group of lovely students from Durham University to put it in the Tunstall Gallery exhibition. You can also see the book in their online exhibition. Nice new technology.
-The Norman Chapel: Yes, inside my walls you can see a memorial for them.
-The Castle: This is a Royal Air Force Book. In case you didn't know, the Norman Chapel was an observation and command post for the RAF from 1941 to 1946.
A. Thank you.
-You: Tell me something I don't know. -You:
B. Just for decoration.
-The Castle: So you're wondering why these oyster shells are here. Here's a hint, they were not only food. -The Castle: Well well, but have a guess, why were they found on the wall?
A. They are building materials to level out the gaps in walls after being eaten.
-You: So the original penny would have been deliberately cut in half to decrease its value to make a smaller purchase? -You:
B. Sorry~ Tails.
-The Castle: It is a worn silver halfpenny. Have you ever been in a situation where you can't break a big bill? -The Castle: Well done my child. Do you want to flip a coin? My friend who curated the Tunstall Gallery just couldn't resist flipping all the coins she could get her hands on. She says heads.
A. She got it!
-You:
-Archaeologists: The fractured bone would have affected the raven's ability to fly, meaning that it may have received care for some time to be able to mend the bone. So we surmise that this species could be a companion animal, comparable to cats and dogs.
B. I wouldn't do that, but it's interesting to know.
-The Castle: This is a raven's scapula, also known as the shoulder blade. It shows signs of a healed break.
A. I would love a pet like that.
-You:
-The Castle: Aye, I have asked a group of lovely students from Durham University to help him get there. You can meet him online later too. Nice new technology.
-The Castle: Well, well, please forgive him, he is really old now. But remember, the sound of his words used to echo around my walls in walls in the 1700s. I still remember that feeling.
-The Prayer Book: Please…meet me at the Tunstall Gallery exhibition…
-The Prayer Book: *cough.
A. See you.
C. Hooray! (No one is allowed to refuse my invitation, darling. Just give up looking for the NO option.)
B. Yeeepeee!
Sounds like you have a fairly young spirit. These badges from the early 2000s were worn by Castle students to show their college pride. Speaking of which, would you like to live in the Castle?
A. Yes!
B. Nope. That's too hard.
Lovely. I feel like I'm getting to know you better. Now cast one of your Dice of Destiny, just like medieval people played ‘Hazard’. Think of a number from 1-6 and click the dice. Did you guess it right?
A. YEAA! Pay me the money!
B. Nope. That's too hard.

What do you think of the layout of the Castle made by your peers? Since you are the bishop now, what changes would you make to the Castle?
For over 750 years, the Prince Bishops of Durham made many changes to the structure of Durham Castle. The Norman Chapel was constructed by your senior peer Bishop St Calais in around 1080 CE. Please look out for the raven bone and prayer book in the exhibition!
