INTRODUCTION

Throughout history, many scientists have developed theories in order to try to explain the origin of life. Miller and Urey's experiment was one of them.

01

OBJECTIVE

The experiment attempted to replicate the conditions of the Earth's early atmosphere and oceans to test whether organic molecules could be created abiogenically, that is, formed from chemical reactions occuring between inorganic molecules through to be present at the time.

+ INFO

Hypothesis

  • Organic compounds such as amino acids can be synthesised from inorganic materials under simulated Earth conditions
  • Basic building blocks of life may have emerged spontaneously from non-living matter
  • Life emerged on Earth due to different enviromental conditions
  • Life can be formed out of chemical reactions

Steps

  1. Simulating Erath's early atmosphere
  2. Introduction of energy
  3. Circulation and condensation
  4. Collection and analysis
  5. Results and findings

Results

It was finally demonstrated that electrical sparking a mixture of methane, ammonia and hydrogen in the presence of water produces amino acids within a variety of organic compounds.

+ INFO

FLAWS

The experiment would later be criticized for the lack of accuracy in the conditions that were supposed to represent the Earth's early atmosphere, given that they were based on Oparin´s theory.

CONCLUSION

The Miller Urey experiment is significant because it provided the first evidence that organic molecules could be spontaneously produced from only inorganic molecules.
