War Horse
The role of animals in first world war
by Elena De Ambroggio, Viola Martini and Adele Rolando
Introduction
During World War I, animals became important allies on the battlefield. From carrying supplies to delivering messages and providing comfort, they played crucial roles standing by soldiers. They contributed to the war effort with resilience and sometimes formed special bonds with humans during these challenging times.
The role of horses

Horses played a huge role in World War I. They did lots of jobs like carrying soldiers, pulling carts with supplies, and sometimes even going into battle. Soldiers and horses became close allies, but they both faced the same dangers. Even though machines started to be used more, horses stayed very important in war. This shows how humans and animals teamed up in tough times.

Birds in the first word war
During World War I, birds, especially pigeons, were crucial messengers. Their homing instincts allowed them to carry messages between soldiers when other methods failed. Pigeons were trained to fly accurately, making them ideal messengers. Canaries were also used to find poisonous gases in the trenches, getting early warnings to soldiers. These animal allies played important roles in communication and safety during the war.
dogs: comfort and help
Dogs were fundamental in World War I. They helped soldiers in many ways. Some dogs were messengers, carrying important messages between troops (like birds). Others were trained to find injured soldiers on the battlefield and bring help. Some dogs were even trained to sniff out bombs or detect dangerous gases in the trenches. Soldiers also found comfort in having dogs around as companions. These animals were brave and loyal, just like soldiers, and their help made a big difference to support and comfort humans
War dogs memorial
In London's Hyde Park, there is a memorial dedicated to the animals that served and died in wars, including World War I. The monument features sculptures of dogs, horses, and other animals, honoring their contributions to the war effort.
Cher ami
Cher Ami was a homing pigeon used by the U.S. Army Signal Corps during World War I. In October 1918, she saved the lives of nearly 200 American soldiers by delivering a message despite being severely wounded. She became one of the most famous pigeons of the war and was awarded for her bravery.
In conclusion
In conclusion, animals were really important in World War I. They showed bravery and loyalty, which demonstrates how humans and animals can work together, even in times like war. Their stories are a reminder of their big impact on history and how much we rely on them and need them.
