RECAP

Curriculum is far from being a simple list of content or a mere outline of methods and objectives.

What is Curriculum?

According to Stanhouse Curriculum is an attempt to communicate the essential principles and features of an educational proposal in such a way that it is open for critical scrutiny and capable of effective translation into practice.

CURRICULUM POLICY, STUDY and DEVELOPMENT

CURRICULUM POLICY SETS OF GUIDELINES AND STANDRDS FOR WHAT SHOULD BE INCLUDED IN THE CURRICULUM.
CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT THIS IS THE PRACTICAL ASPECT OF CREATING, REVIEWING, AND UPDATING THE CURRICULUM CONTENT.
CURRICULUM STUD Y IT IS ABOUT UNDERSTANDING THE PRINCIPLES, THEORIES, AND SUGGESTIONS THAT UNDERPIN THE DESIGN AND IMPLIMENTATION OF A CURRICULUM.

LETS DISCUSS

Factors that Influence Curriculum Design These include: 1. teacher’s individual characteristics, 2. application of technology, 3. student’s cultural background and socio-economic status, 4. Economic factors 5. classroom management- interactions between teachers and students 6. Environmental factors 7. Political factors 8. Social factors.

CURRICULUM CHANGE IN SOUTH AFRICA

prior 1994 (Apartheid curriculum) Curriculum change in South Africa was necessary to handle the discrimination, racism, and inequalities that were present in the educational system at the time.

NCS (CAPS) PRINCIPLES

LUCKY KGALUSHI

Disciplines like Visual Thinking make it easier to visually capture rich notes using images, charts, infographics, and simple drawings. Go for it!

CURRICULUM PRIOR 1994

Blacks were educated to meet their “cultural standards”, as established by white government officials. Thus, the curriculum was created to keep blacks poor in factories and as manual laborers under white control.

Visual content is a universal, cross-cutting language, like music. We are able to understand images from millions of years ago, even from other cultures.

Learning Experiences

HERE THE EMPHISI IS ON LEARNERS EXPERIENCES.WHAT LEARNING EXPERIENCES MEETS THIS OBJECTIVES. (Think Teaching Strategies and Content) For instance: Open Discussion

CAPS IN 2011 implemeted 2012

In 2012, the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) was set to be applied in grades I-3 and grade 10 in 2012 and grades 4-9 and 11 in 2013 and grade 12 in 2014. Revised National Curriculum Statement (RNCS) was not to be completely eradicated

Organisation

HERE THE EMPHASIS IS ON HOW THE LEARNING EXPERIENCES ARE ORGANISED INTO A CURRICULUM PROGRAM."IS THE LEARNING EXPERIENCES ORGANISED INTO UNITS, YEAR-BLOCK OR IN JUST ONE PARTICULAR OUTCOME FOR THE WHOLE PROGRAM."

The Aims and Objectives

Here the emphasis is on the following question:1. What is this curriculum for? 2. Why and how does it work? 3. What is the whole purpose? The answers that derives from asking all this questions should lead to the educational purpose that the institution should seek to attain.

Wheeler, Stenhouse & Dawey

The process models assume curriculum design to be an ongoing process, dependent on emerging information and practice

stages in the process model of curriculum development 1. content selection 2. selection of principles ofprocedures (learning strategies) 3. divising teaching method and materials 4. EVALUATION BY CRITERIA

REVISED NCS IN 2000

A careful review of Outcome Based Education (OBE) in 2000 led to the construction of the Revised National CurRiculum Statement (RNCS) gRADE R - 9 IN 2002 IT WAS CHANGED TO NCS INCLUDING GRADE 10 - 12

Objective Model (Tyler,1949)

here the emphasis is:1. CLEARLY STATED LEARNING OBJECTIVES 2. ASSESSMENT ARE BASED ON LEARNING OBJECTIVES 3. DIFFERENTIATED LEARNING OBJECTIVES

C2005 Designed in 1997

The first curricular reform in South Africa after Democracy was birthed in March 1997 and it was called Outcome Based Education (OBE) to substitute and solve the pre-existing Apartheid curriculum.Outcome Based Education was adopted from developed countries like the United States of America and Australia

EVALUATION

HERE THE EMPHASIS IS ON HOW CAN THIS PROGRAM BE ASSESSED OR EVALUATED.> TAB INTO QUALITY ASSURANCE PROCESS. > CHECK THE LEARNING OBJECTIVES AGAINST THE ASSESSMENT. > EVALUATE THE OVERALL SUCCESS OR FAILURES OF THE CURRICULUM PROGREM. HOW CAN WE DETERMINE IF WE ARE ATTAINING THOSE AIMS AND OBJECTIVES.
