Quotes

“A 60-year dream came true yesterday; McLean finally has a community center. No longer just a gleam in the eye of determined club women and civic leaders, or a fading, promissory billboard in the middle of a large field beside Dolley Madison Boulevard, the center was dedicated with appropriate ruffles and flourishes." – Washington Star, 1975 “The finer graces of recreation mark McLean Community Center.” – Kerry Dougherty, Washington Post, 1979

Quotes

“The quality of life for all of us was greatly enhanced by the addition of the McLean Community Center.” – Sidney Teweles, President AARP, Great Falls Gazette 1980 “The McLean Community Center must be the prototype facility of its type in the metro area…The reason for the center’s existence and continued success is simple – the people of McLean wanted one place where they could find a wide variety of activities, and they were willing to pay for it. In return for their financial support, they enjoy the luxury of theater productions, concerts and all the other activities on a level that most area towns can only dream of.” – John Holmes, Washington Times, 1982 “I want to tell you I am thrilled at the activity in this community center and this theatre, fulfilling those early dreams. Now I dream of a balcony.” – Robert Alden, McLean Providence Journal, 1984 “The McLean Community Center represents a showcase of civic pride and a community’s commitment to the arts, learning, and quality use of leisure time.” – The McLean Handbook, 1986

Quotes

“One of the Washington Area’s best multi-purpose community-based facilities, the McLean Community Center will be the official host of the local telecast of the twenty-sixth annual MDA Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon. The Alden Theatre…will offer all the needed elements for conducting a professional television broadcast.” – Telethon Special Issue, 1991 “If you want to buy this, this and that, I’ll give you a GI Joe for 50 cents,” said Jason Pecarich explaining his marketing strategy. Jason was among hundreds of youngsters who participated in McLean’s flea market for children, a barely-under control selling frenzy put on every fall by the community center.” – Robert F. Howe, The Washington Post, 1992 “I see the center not just as a gathering place, but as the backbone of the community.” – Frederic Roehner, McLean Times, 1998 “…it is this very real ownership by the McLean community that sustains the center, helps it to grow, and makes it so special! My fondest wish for the future of the McLean Community Center is that this special quality would always remain at its heart.” – Page Shelp, Executive Director, 1975-1999

Quotes

“A bunch of us were studying art at American University…finding places to show our paintings. And we said there ought to be a place in McLean, which is growing. It’s a cultural dessert.” – Nancy Bradley, one of MPA’s founders, in the McLean Connection article “MPA Celebrates 50 Years”, 2012 “We believed there was something inside, and we didn’t count the costs or make the plans. We just took it one step at a time, and it happened.” – Ambassador and Civil Rights Leader Andrew Young speaking at MCC MLK Day Celebration, 2014 “I want to start this message with a huge “thank you” to a talented professional staff and many dedicated volunteers who made it possible for us to continue our high-quality programs uninterrupted through months of complex satellite operations involving multiple locations and temporary office spaces from Spring 2017 through December 2018.” – Former MCC Executive Director George Sachs, 2019

“I have seen a lot of shows for kids. I mean A LOT. This was by far one of the very best.” – Alden patron survey response on Doktor Kaboom performance, 2021 "This old firehouse stands as a reminder of McLean's early history in civic pride. It is a testament to the countless number of volunteers, both men and women whose dedication and spirit honor we celebrate today." – Read by Mary Lipsey, a representative on the Fairfax County History Commission and chair of the marker program, from a letter by Supervisor John Foust (D), 2022 "The Alden is not a large venue, but with inexpensive tickets, it was filled with an audience representing a broad range of ages. As many classical music presenters struggle with bringing audiences back into their halls after the pandemic lockdowns, it was an encouraging sign." – Charles T. Downey, Washington Classical Review, 2023 “The McLean Community Center is a vital part of the greater McLean area and its facilities and programs are an important resource for greater McLean area residents.” – MCA President Scott Spitzer, 2023
