INTRODUCTION -New Zealand lies southwest of the Pacific Ocean and consists of two main islands formed by the action of volcanoes and glaciations.

CLIMATE The coastal climate is mild to cool – it rarely gets very hot, but inland regions can be cold

ANIMALS -New Zealand has been isolated from other lands for millions of years. This allowed some animals and plants to develop into fascinating forms, such as giant land snails and flightless birds, including the famous kiwi.

History

Polynesians reached New Zealand in the early 13th century. The first Europeans arrived in 1642. In 1769 the English arrived and in the 1830s they made New Zealand one of their colonies. In 1947 they became officially independent.
