La estrella de mar europea (Asterias Rubens Linnaeus como nombre científico) tiene cinco brazos terminados en punta roma y cubiertos de espinas calcáreas. Mide de 10- 30 cemtímetros. Su color es naranja pálido o marrón, en ocasiones morado. Su tiempo de vida estimado es 10 años.
