The vaquita porpoise is a small porpoise that is characterized by its small size and unique coloration. Its population has decreased in recent decades, and a few specimens remain, possibly less than 10 individuals.
The main threat to the vaquita is illegal fishing for totoaba. Nets used to capture totoabas also accidentally trap vaquitas, which has contributed to their decline.
Conservation efforts include a ban on totoaba fishing, marine patrols to prevent illegal fishing, and the implementation of measures to reduce bycatch. Despite these efforts, the situation of the vaquita remains critical.
