Two Types of Subitizing: Perceptual and Conceptual

Perceptual Subitizing: A child without counting sees a pattern of objects and knows the number of objects.

A child sees this pattern and knows it is 5 dots.

Conceptual Subitizing: A child without counting is able to conceptually combine two patterns and know the total.

Achild will see these two patterns and know they total 8.

Counting On- The child may know how to subitize. The child recognizes patterns of objects up to 6.

They can grab those numbers with hand and count counters to find the total.
