There are 3 main types of sentences; simple, compound, complex.
Great! Now remember how we talked about independent and dependent clauses?
Yes! A sentence is also known as an independent clause because it contains one or more complete thoughts and ideas!
Good morning, class! Today, we are going to dive into sentence types. Can you tell me the four parts of a sentence?
1. A capital letter2. A subject 3. A verb 4. Punctuation
Excellent!Now, there are three main types of sentences.1. Simple sentences2. Compound sentences 3. Complex sentences
Can we dig deeper into this?
And what about dependent clauses?
A dependent clause is NOT a sentence because it does not contain a FULL thought.
Simple sentences
Simple sentences contain only one main thought or idea = ONE independent clause.For example, I enjoy playing table tennis with my friend. Did you enjoy the movie last night? In both of these example sentences, there is one subject and a verb, it is a complete thought therefore an independent clause and a simple sentence.
Remember, coordinating conjunctions
Coordinating conjunctions review:F = FORA = AND N = NOR B = BUT O = OR Y = YET S = SO
Compound sentences
Compound sentences contain TWO independent clauses joined together with a coordinating conjunction (FANBOYS). For example, Our car broke down, so we took a taxi home. Would you rather eat a sandwich, or go get groceries?
Note: you have to have a special punctuation (a semicolon or a comma and a conjunction to join two independent clauses together).
Remember, subordinating conjunctions
Subordinating conjunctions review:after, though, as, as if, as long as, because, before, despite, even if, even though, if, in order, rather than, since, so that, that, though, unless, until, when, where, whereas, whether, and while.
CompLEX sentences
Complex sentences contain ONE independent clause AND ONE dependent clause joined together with a subordinating conjunction. For example, We were late to the party, because we couldn't get a taxi. After he obtained his degree, Ty got a job at a computer company.
