What is Funds of Knowledge?

Examples of how Funds of Knowledge affect Classroom Instruction.

Getting to know my school.

Funds of knowledge is the knowledge students have acquired from living expereinces outside of school (Moll, 2019). EXAMPLES: Being able to fix a car, care for a baby, or sewing (No Time for Flash Cards, 2018).

The school is a Title 1 school, meaning the community it serves is comprised of families of low-socio-econimics status. The cultural background is diverse, ranging from Hispanic, African American, to Caucasion. We have families that are Christians, Muslims, or Atheists.

When students' Funds of Knowledge is incorporated into the curriculum it has positive affects. 1. Makes the content culturally relevant (No Time for Flash Cards, 2018). 2. Helps students make a deeper connection with the learnign material (No Time for Flash Cards, 2018). 3. Allows teachers to connect with students and help bridge the gap between home and school (No Time for Flash Cards, 2018).

What are cultural values?

Effects of cultural values and community background on learning.

Cultural values are core beliefs shared within a community that teaches the differences betwen good and bad, and acts as a guide to make choics, reach goals, etc (Dyczewski & Sławik, (2016). EXAMPLES: Values based on religious beliefs, values based on socio-economics status, values based on traditions.

Cultural values and community background play a major role in a student's success in school. When a student's culture values education, they will apply themselves in school. If the community is low-socio-economics status, there may be less opportunites to enhance their child's education, such as enrolling them in enrichment programs.

Christian Perspective:

How do Funds of knowledge and cultural values meet?

A Christian's perspective may affect student's Funds of Knowledge in a school environment because not every school allows or focuses on a religious outlook, especially in a public school.

Funds of Knowledge stem from the culural practices and values of a family's inner culture and/or communiy (No Time for Flash Cards, 2018). What students learn at home is usually what their family culture values the most, such as learning to cook traditional meals.
