What is the NKVD?
-Soviet secret police agency -People’s Commissariat for Internal Affairs -Used to eliminate those who he didn’t think belonged or made the union “cleaner” -The main purpose was national security -Arrested and sent people to prison camps for the most insane reasons -Carried out political kidnappings and assassinations -Instituted ethnic and domestic repression -Eliminated opponents as he saw fit
How is it similar/dissimilar to the KGB?
They were both counterintelligence secret political police. They were different because the KGB worked more for the community like bodyguards, secret projects, and armed operations while the NKVD focused on things like war and military force.
Who ran the NKVD? Genrikh Yagoda was one of the main leaders/founders of the NKVD. He was a part of the Soviet Union and didn’t care about the importance of other places around the world and their citizens.
Define what the NKVD is. What did they do? They were a Russian federative socialist republic. They were a normal task force in charge of regular police work at first. Later they were assigned to protect their gov and nation. They killed lots of people just to prove their point and convey a message.
What is the modern version of the NKVD and how is it different? They were renamed ministries and are now more humane and follow more laws now. They still do their job of protecting but in a less violent manner.
