How to use AI responsibly EVERY time

Three highly recommended tools to help with development

USING ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

Accessibility

"AI can improve accessibility in learning materials through features like automatic transcription, language translation, and adaptive interfaces that adjust to individual needs, making learning more inclusive." A commonly used tool for accessibility is Microsoft's automatic alternative text generator. When you insert an image in Word or PowerPoint, and you want to add automatic alt text, select the Generate a description for me button in the Alt Text pane. However, it is important to review and edit the generated text before approving it.

USING ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

Gamification

"AI solutions are taking simulation-based learning to the next level. A recent study by Dai and Ke (2022) shows that AI has a variety of applications in simulation-based learning, including Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITSs), Virtual Reality, simulation games, medical simulations, and smart edutainment."

"AI can create dynamic, engaging learning environments, such as simulations and educational games that adapt to the skill level of the learner, making learning more engaging and effective."

Are you unfamiliar with Gamification and want to learn more? Watch this YouTube video that explains what it is and how it can be used in Instructional Design.

USING ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

Recommended Tools

Synthesia "Synthesia promises professional videos in 15 minutes. It leverages AI to turn text into speech in over 120 languages and allows users to choose from over 140 diverse avatars to star in their video. With no video equipment, filming, or editing required, Synthesia is a great AI solution for designers tasked with video projects."

WellSaid Labs "Recording voiceovers used to be a time-consuming project for content creators but today, this AI can create voiceovers in real time. WellSaid Labs is a top AI voice platform that makes voice production easier, faster and cheaper."

ChatGPT "ChatGPT by OpenAI is an AI chatbot or natural language processing tool. Think of it as autocomplete but times 1,000 – it’s trained on a vast amount of data. For example, you can ask it to ideate design ideas (based on the huge database it’s trained on). Or you can research things, create prototypes, and so on."

USING ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

Personalized Learning Paths

"AI can analyze individual learner data, such as past performance, preferences, and learning pace, to create lesson sequences tailored to each student. This ensures content is relevant and engaging. For example, if a student struggles with algebra but is proficient in geometry, a personalized learning path will present the student with lessons that bolster a more robust understanding of algebra while continuing to challenge the student further in geometry."

USING ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

Research & Brainstorming

"AI streamlines and enhances the important prep work needed for building comprehensive, current, and engaging learning experiences. AI tools can:

  • Efficiently transcribe and analyze subject matter expert interviews.
  • Summarize transcriptions and long articles and identify insights.
  • Automate content-gathering from multiple online sources, curating relevant articles, research, and more.
  • Propose ideas for content structures and interactive elements based on gathered information."

USING ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

Best Practices: "EVERY"

"VERIFY facts, figures, quotes, and data using reliable sources to ensure there are no hallucinations or bias."

"EDIT your prompt and ask follow up questions to have the AI improve its output."

"REVISE the results to reflect your unique needs, style, and/or tone. AI output is a great starting point, but shouldn’t be a final product."

"YOU are ultimately responsible for everything you create with AI. Always be transparent about if and how you used AI."

"EVALUATE the initial output to see if it meets the intended purpose and your needs."
