HOW MANY TYPES OF CONDITIONALS ARE THERE?
- ZERO Conditional: If + Present Simple, Present
- FIRST Conditional: If + Present Simple, Will + V.
- SECOND Conditional: If + Past Simple, Would + Infinitive
- THIRD Conditional: If + Past Perfect, Would have + Past Participle
ZERO CONDITIONAL:
We use the zero conditional to talk about things that are generally true, especially for laws and rules.
IF + PRESENT SIMPLE, PRESENT
- "If water boils, it evaporates"
- "If I drink too much coffe, I can't sleep at night"
- "If it rains, I get wet"
FIRST CONDITIONAL:
We use the first conditional when we talk about future situations we believe are real or possible.
IF + PRESENT SIMPLE, WILL + INFINITIVE
- "If it rains tonight, I will stay at home."
- "Arsenal will be top of the league if they win."
- "When I finish work, I'll call you."
SECOND CONDITIONAL
The second conditional is used to imagine present or future situations that are impossible or unlikely in reality
IF + PAST SIMPLE, WOULD + INFINITIVE
- "If we had a garden, we could have a cat."
- "If I won a lot of money, I'd buy a big house in the country."
- "I wouldn't worry if I were you."
THIRD CONDITIONAL
The third conditional is used to imagine a different past. We imagine a change in a past situation and the different result of that change.
IF + PAST PERFECT, WOULD HAVE + PAST PARTICIPLE
- "You would have passed your exam if you had worked harder."
- "If you had worked harder, you would have passed your exam."
- "If you hadn't lied to me before, I would have believed you."
