WHICH IS THE TASK

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE?

SELECT THE RIGHT INFORMATION

Step 4

Step 5

ORGANISE THE INFORMATION

WRITE AND CHECK YOUR MISTAKES

GENERAL TIPS

  • Don't select all the information! just relevant information for the task!
      • You'll have 40 minutes for this writing so take your time and analyse the task, cross out the information you won't need to use or underline the information which is important.
  • Adapt it to the situation: reader, formality...
  • Transmit the information in a CLEAR COHERENT way, paraphrasing (using your own words) if necessary.

What do I have to write?

An article? A report? A letter?
  • It is important to adapt the task to the situation and addressee

Who is it addressed to?

This will be important in order to decide on the register you need to use: formal, semiformal or informal? The vocabulary and structures used differ according to register. For example, in formal English short forms should be avoided

Use specific structures for each purpose, depending on what you are asked to do.

  • Give advice
  • Give information
  • Recommend
  • Make suggestions
  • Give opinions
  • Complain about something
FUNCTIONAL LANGUAGE

The key to success!

Find out which information is relevant to the task.

Do NOT include unnecessary information in the writing

  • This is why it is important to read the task carefully and understand the purpose of your writing.

Cohesion and coherence...

...help us to understand the text

Even if text organisation is not part of the criteria, writing well-organized paragraphs and sequencing the information will help with cohesion (connection between the information in the text) and coherence (making things clear, being logical). Writing in a logical and clear way IS part of the criteria.

  • Take your time to plan what your are going to write.

Clear information

Accuracy is not part of the criteria either but a text without mistakes or with very few and unimportant mistakes will be easier to understand.

So, if you have time take some time to revise your task.
