History

It was after a small group of people sailed to Amchitka Island, off the coast of Alaska, with the aim of trying to prevent a US nuclear weapons test, that this organization called GreenPeace emerged in 1971.

Objectives

Their goal is to ensure that Earth can nurture life in all its diversity for many more years to come.

That means...

• protect biodiversity in all its forms
• prevent pollution and abuse of the earth’s ocean, land, air and fresh water
• end all nuclear threats
• promote peace, global disarmament and non-violence

Issues they work on:- climate and energy- biodiversity- social and economic

What they do

The GreenPeace organization begins by investigating the problem very well and then being able to respond immediately with the appropriate measures. In other words, depending on the situation, GreenPeace works with the aim of putting an end to this problem, to save the environment.

Where they operate

GreenPeace operates in more than 55 countries across Europe, Asia, America, Africa and the Pacific. And its main headquarters is an organization called GreenPeace International.

GreenPeace in Portugal

Although there is still no GreenPeace headquarters in Portugal, there is a great support among Portuguese people regarding environmental causes, and therefore GreenPeace International intends to expand its capacity to operate in Portugal. Portugal is the EU country with the highest fish consumption per year - around 57kg. It was then that GreenPeace decided to integrate Portugal into its cause, to protect the oceans.
