Ethics

Ethics help me keep track of my moral compass in a place of work. My anticipated career (computer science) ethics are important because they’ll help shape the way decisions are made to protect the privacy of the company and its users. It also helps ensure that members of the company will follow a certain standard of ethics with their own personal code of ethics making the work environment more open-minded and safe. Establishing your own code of ethics is important because it helps remind you of your core values and helps shape how you act in the workplace. Without it, you could fail or have strong setbacks when facing challenges/tough situations.

Scenario: During a code review, a colleague gives harsh criticism suggesting major changes to my code, undermining my knowledge. Response: I maintain self-respect by standing up for myself and explaining my reasoning for the code I created. Then, respectfully, I will address the suggested changes and express my willingness to collaborate on the code with the colleague to find common ground to foster a friendship based on mutual respect and professional growth.

Scenario: While working on a software project, I discovered a potential problem that could lead to personal data being leaked. Response: I get together with the group I am working with and establish an open floor for discussion on how to address/fix this problem. By doing so, it helps create a sense of teamwork/friendship within the team.

My code of ethics is guided by my four core values: friendship, openness, self-respect, and growth. I believe that to have a good environment with others one must create friendships to help establish trust and loyalty. Having trust and loyalty helps lead to openness. Without openness, new ideas cannot be shared so easily. To help establish openness I plan to use my empathy to help those around me feel comfortable to share their ideas. With empathy I also want to have self-respect, being able to say no is important and I want to be comfortable with standing up for myself. My goal in any environment is to grow my knowledge and skills in as many forms as possible. To summarize, my code of ethics reflects my dedication to integrity and core values to enhance my decision-making, contribution to a positive work environment, and personal/professional development.
