FOR

  • He lived in Oxford for 3 years and then he moved. (completed past)

We use for with a period of time in the past, present or future.

  • They’ve lived in Oxford for a couple of months. (began in the past and continues into the present)

For refers to periods of time (e.g. 3 years, 4 hours, ages, a long time, months, years).

  • We’re going to stay in Oxford for three days and then we’re going to London for a day. (future plans)

SINCE

We use since with a point in time in the past.

Since gives the starting point of actions, events or states. It refers to when things began.

  • I play the piano since I was a child.
  • I have taught at this school since 2018.
  • They have been married since 1980.
  • Since this morning, since last week, since yesterday, SINCE 1985.

conceptual map

present perfect + for & since

Using the present perfect, we can define a period of time before now by considering its duration, with for + a period of time, or by considering its starting point, with since + a point in time. FOR and SINCE can also both be used with the past perfect. SINCE can only be used with perfect tenses. FOR can also be used with the simple past.
