Bar Chart

Step-by-Step Guide to Making a Bar Graph in Google Sheets

Saguaro Temperature Lab

Step 1: Add a Chart

  1. Highlight the cells with means and chart labels
  2. Click 'Insert' and then click 'Chart' and it will give you something like below. Go to next slide to see how to fix it

Step 2: Fix the chart

In the chart editor panel, select 'Switch rows / columns and remove all other check boxes. Your chart will now look like below. It will still need its axis titles fixed.

Step 2: Fix the chart

In the chart editor panel, select 'Customize' and then 'Chart & axis title'. You can update the chart title, delete the horizontal axis label (since each bar is labeled), and fix the vertical axis label. That should give you:

Step 3: Confirm Chart Has the Following:

  • X axis and Y axis are labeled and have units (if relavant)
  • You only have bars for the data
  • Chart has a descriptive title that isn't just the labels of the data
  • Chart has a legend
  • Gridlines are removed, tick marks are present on X and Y axis
All of these options are present in the Chart editor panel.

Step 4: Save your chart as a clean pdf

To get credit you must submit your chart without the spreadsheet in the background. Click on your chart, click the three dots in the upper right, click download, then click pdf or PNG depending on which on you need. This will save your chart onto your computer. Submit that file for credit or post into your write-up depending on assignment.
