The first reported case of HIV/AIDS in the UK was reported in December 1981. John Eaddie was a 49 year old homosexual man who frequently visited the United States. How did Princess Diana change the perception of the HIV/AIDS movement?
Speaking to a HIV patient
Shaking hands with a patient
Walking away from a HIV patient
Shaking hands with a patient
This was deeply significant beacuse she was an influential royal figure - 'the people's princess' - and she was photagraphed touching a HIV patient without gloves. Prior to this point, it was believed that HIV could spread simply through touch, so patients were seperated and ostracised. This move by the princess in 1987 was crucial in shifting the public narrative of HIV/AIDS, making people a lot more understanding of the disease.

When was Section 28 passed?
1988
1976
1985
1988
Section 28 was passed in 1988, and it prevented schools from 'promoting' homosexuality in schools. This was hugely significant to the HIV/AIDS crisis because it was a specific government policy that disallowed education on the disease simply due to the fact that it was mainly spread through the gay community. We can see this as a failure of government policy because young people were missing out on vital information regarding how to prevent HIV/AIDS.

Leaflets and posters in multiple languages
This is an example of a poster that would have been on the wall of a hospital or doctors office. It has a variety of different languages in so that the information can reach as many people as possible. This shows that the crisis was permeating every community.

300 million
1 billion
5 million
1 billion people!
This concert was a tribute to Freddie Mercury, a hugely famous public figure who died of AIDS in 1991. It was broadcast live on television and redio to 76 countries, and managed to pull in an audience of one billion. This shows the connection between popular culture and the HIV/AIDS crisis, and it is a clear example of how public opinion began shifting away from the negative rhetoric that had dominated the media. Instead, people came together to raise money for the cause.
