Relative Clauses

Relative clauses give more information about a person, thing, place, etc. in a sentence.

The person who got the job was the boss's daughter.

The interview question which I found hardest was the one about my weaknesses.

The person whose desk is next to mine has been fired.

Relative clauses

why

Please call back on Tuesday, when the manager will be back at work.

I work in an open-plan office, where it can get really noisy.

Robert never explained why he handed in his notice.

Reduced relative clauses

When the relative pronoun is the subject of the relative clause it can be reduced with the present participle or with the past participle form. Example: Everyone who applies for the job must enclose a CV.

Reduced relative clauses

The job, which involved trying to sell things over the phone, was really difficult. The job, involving trying to sell things over the phone, was really difficult. An application letter which has been written by hand might make a better impression. An application letter written by hand might make a better impression.

I work in the city council building, which was built over 200 years ago. I work in the city council building, built over 200 years ago.

Participle clauses

We use participle clauses to make sentences shorter. They can replace the subject and the verb in a sentence of the subject of both clauses is the same.

  • Wanting to make a good impression, Jim bought a good suit.
  • Given the chance, I'd work there again.
  • Not knowing what to do, I asked my supervisor for help.

Perfect participle clauses

We can use a perfect participle (having + past participle) to combine clauses that have the same subject. She had been working there for so long that she wanted a change. Having worked there for so long, she wanted a change.

Not having worked in sales before, I didn't know what to expect.
