Defining relative clause

Shakespeare is the person who wrote Hamlet.

Italy is where pizza was invented.

Tip!
  • Gives ESSENTIAL information.
  • The sentence doesn't make sense without it.

Non-defining relative clause

Zamenhof, who was born in Poland, invented Esperanto.

Italian, which is my favourite language, is easy.

Tip!
  • To give EXTRA information.
  • We use a comma BEFORE and AFTER the relative clause.
