Deadline Awareness

Recognize when you (or an employee you manage) has experienced a QLE. Understand the criteria and determine if the situation qualifies.

Depending on the event, you may be eligible to enroll in a new health insurance plan, add dependents, or switch plans.

  • Marriage, divorce or legal separation
  • Pregnancy, adoption of a child, or any adding of dependents
  • Losing coverage due to a death in the family
  • Losing health insurance for any reason (except not paying premiums)
  • Losing eligibility (Medicaid, Medicare or a Children's Health Insurance Program)
  • Turning 26 and losing coverage through a parent's plan
  • Loss of job-based coverage (quit or fired)

Qualified Life Events (QLE's)

A significant life change that allows an employee to make adjustments to their health insurance, tax filings, and other plans outside of the open enrollment period

When a life event occurs you will have 30 days from the date of the qualifying event to make changes to your health insurance coverage

  • Your spouse retires, which forces you to lose coverage
  • Your spouse changes jobs

Be aware of the time constraints. Act promptly within the allowed 30 day window to ensure that you can make the necessary adjustments without complications.

Be prepared to provide documentation to verify the qualifying event. This may include marriage certificates, birth certificates, or proof of loss of coverage

Assess your current coverage and consider if adjustments are needed.
