Drive-In

A partical drive-in theatre, the theatre de Guadalupe, opened in Las Cruses, New Mexico, in 1915. A drive-in theatre is a structure consisting of a large outdoor screen, a projection booth, a concession stand, and a large parking lot for cars. They where very popular with families and young people because of the informal environment compared to cinema.

March 9th: Ruth Handler and Mattel lauch the Barbie dool, named after Handler´s daughter. Her revolutionary desing, resembling an adult womam rather than a baby, offered girls a new avenue for imaginative play, fostering independence and empowerment.

May 13th: The first world championship race takes place in Uk. Michael Schumacher won his sixth championship in 2003.

Fifa World Cup (1950/1954)

The 1950 tournament in Brazil is still remembered for the "Maracanazo". The 1954 tournament in Switzerland was also notable.

Champions League (1956)

June 13th: The Champions League was the first edition of Europe´s premier club tournament. It was won by Real Madrid, who beat Stade de Reims 4-3 at the Parc des Princes in Paris on 13 June 1956.

June 8th/June 29th: World Cup 1958Pelé won three FIFA World Cups: 1958, 1962 and 1970.

Ray Charles

Ray Charles Robinson Sr. was a blind American singer, songwriter, pianist and alto saxophonist. Charles pioneered the soul music genre in the 1950s, combining blues, jazz, rhythm and blues (R&B) and gospel styles into his music.

James Brown

Brown began his professional career in 1956 and made a name for himself in the late 1950s and early 1960s with live performances and several hit songs.

Korean War

June 25th: The beggining of the Korean War, caused by North Korean invasions to South Korea.

Lisbon Metro

The Lisbon Metro is the rapid transit system in Lisbon. Opened in December 1959, it was the first metro system in Portugal. It started with 11 stations, 6.6 km and 1 line. As of 2017, the system has 56 stations, 44.5 km and 4 lines.

December 1st: Rosa Parks starts the Bus Boycott protests by refusing to give her seat up to a white passenger Martin Luther King Jr fought against the discrimination of African Americans.

James Bond

Casino Royale, published in 1953, was the first James Bond novel. The character was created by author Ian Fleming, inspired by his time in the Second World War. Also known as 007, the James Bond novels follow the MI6 officer and former Royal Naval Reserve Commander on his missions.

Queen Elizabeth visits Portugal

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh were hosted by President Craveiro Lopes and First Lady Berta Ribeiro on their first state visit to Portugal between 18 and 20 February 1957, four years after their coronation.

Marilyn Monroe

Marilyn Monroe was an American actress, model and singer, born on 1 June 1926, who became famous for playing comic "blonde bombshell" characters. She also became one of the most popular sex symbols of the 1950s and early 1960s, and a symbol of the sexual revolution of the era.

European Economic Community

March 25th: The European Economic Community (EEC) was created by France, Italy, west Germany and Benelux. Over the years, it expanded to include the UK, Denmak, Ireland, Greece, Portugal and Spain.

February 15th: Disney releases "Cinderella". The film was directed by Wilfred Jackons, Hamilton Luske and Clyde Geronimi.
