It is used when somenone repeats someone else's words some time later. You need to do some changes such as: Subjects, verbs, time complements as the context and the time have changed. IT IS A STEP BACK IN TIME.

Direct Speech:Present Simple: 'He apologises for everything'

Reported Speech (Past Simple): He said that he apologised for everything

Direct Speech:Present Continuous: 'He is always apologising for everything'
