Associations, what direction are they headed in!

A scatter plot is a graph in which the values of two variables are plotted, the pattern of the resulting points revealing any correlation present. Correlations or associations can be described as positive linear, negative linear, nonlinear, or no association. A linear association can have a trend line/ line of best fit that models the relationship by being close to most of the points.

Nonlinear Associations

A nonlinear scatter plot is a graph that shows some data points that DO NOT resemble a linear pattern (straight line).

No Associations

A no association scatter plot is a graph that DOES NOT show a pattern with the data. The points are scattered.

Scatter plots in the real world??

Scatter plots are used in real life to visually display bivariate data. Anytime mathematicians collect two sets of data, such as outside temperature versus ice cream sales, it can be graphed on a scatter plot to quickly see at a glance if there is a relationship between the two variables.
