LAS CARMELITAS

The convent of the Barefoot Carmelite Mothers in Peñaranda de Bracamonte (Province of Salamanca, Spain) was founded by Don Gaspar de Bracamonte Guzmán, a great patron of the Order, who was buried in the cloister of the convent. In 1667 the traces of Brother Juan de San José were approved and then a suitable site was sought for its location, on the outskirts of the town. This convent constitutes an ensemble that houses the best collection of Italian paintings and Neapolitan bronzes in the area.

The curch of San Miguel

Located in the Plaza de Agustín Martínez Soler, this church, whose interior was almost completely destroyed in 1971, is a great mass of granite masonry, with classicist decoration on the exterior. The parish church of San Miguel has existed since the mid-15th century as a church-fortress. Under the hand of Don Gaspar de Bracamonte, the dome and dome, which were in danger of falling into ruin, were restored. The tower was originally from the same period. However, the current tower dates from the 18th century.

Columns crowned with balls on pedestals were used on the west doorway; in the upper section, a niche houses a Virgin and Child from the end of the 16th century. It is flanked by pilasters and has a triangular pediment above it, which makes us think of Juan de Herrera's classicist approaches.

The bullring of Peñaranda de Bracamonte, known as "La Florida", was created in 1906, although the idea of its construction dates back to the end of the 19th century. Following the successful organisation of a livestock fair, on 15th September 1906, the mayor of the town called a meeting of the local residents to set in motion the construction of a bullring. Several neighbours collaborated in its construction, with 250 members contributing 50 pesetas each to pay for the work.

THE BULLRING
El mercadillo

The Thursday street market is an essential element in the life of the town of Peñaranda de Bracamonte. The arrival of stalls from all over the province and even from Cáceres and other places, makes the squares of the Constitution and Spain become the epicenter of the whole area and those nearby towns in the province of Avila, as is the case of Fontiveros or even Rasueros.

Theatre Calderón

In 1875, this theatre was built by popular initiative and functioned as such until the Civil War, after which it was no longer used for the purposes for which it was created and was sold to private individuals who used it as a warehouse, among other inappropriate uses. In 1989 it was recovered for public ownership, restored with state, community and municipal funds and reopened in 1991. In the same year it joined the Network of Theatres of Castilla y León and since then, co-managed by the Peñaranda de Bracamonte Town Council and the Germán Sánchez Ruipétrez Foundation, it has maintained a stable programme of performing arts.
