TIMELINE

1862
1964
1973
1790
1812

In 1964, Washingtonians were allowed to vote in the presidential election.

Slaves owned in Washington were emancipated on April 16, 1862, nine months before the Emancipation Proclamation, and it then became a center for freed slaves.

The city was only allowed to elect its own mayor in 1973.

President George Washington chose the exact site along the Potomac and Anacostia rivers, and the city was officially founded in 1790 after both Maryland and Virginia ceded land to this new "district," to be distinct from the rest of the states. To design the city, he appointed Pierre Charles L'Enfant, who presented a vision for a bold, modern city with grand avenues and ceremonial spaces reminiscent of another great world capital, L'Enfant's native Paris. He designed a grid system, the center of which would be the Capitol building.

During the War of 1812 against Great Britain, enemy forces invaded the city and razed much of it, including the newly completed White House, the Capitol, and the Library of Congress.

Olimpia

Washington DC is located in the northwest of the United States, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean.

Population

The population amounts to 677,827. The principal religion is Catholic. The most spoken language in the state is English but several American Indian tribe languages are also spoken.

ABRAHAM LINCOLN

Abraham Lincoln became the United States' 16th President in 1861, issuing the Emancipation Proclamation that declared forever free those slaves within the Confederacy in 1863. He led the United States through the American Civil War, defending the nation as a constitutional union, defeating the insurgent Confederacy, abolishing slavery, expanding the power of the federal government, and modernizing the U.S. economy.

WHITE HOUSE

Reconstruction was completed in 1817, and President James Monroe and his family were able to move into the building, which was now painted white, as it is today. In 1902, President Theodore Roosevelt designated the nickname for the mansion to now be its official name, the White House.

Typical food

One of the city's more affordable dishes, pupusas are essentially pancakes made with corn flour, which generally come stuffed with chicharron, refried beans, Oaxacan cheese, and crispy pork-skin cracklings, and server with a side of dish of curtido cabbage slaw, made with grated onions and carrots, Mexican oregano, appe cider vinegar, and a touch of hot pepper sauce.
