Model of Revolution

Crisis Stage

Convalescence

Symptomatic Stage

Incubation Stage

Economically weak – poor economy, government is in debt, bankrupt, must tax Politically weak – government (monarchies) is ineffective, cannot enforce policy, some start to doubt the rulers, overbearing actions/laws. Class Conflict – growing discontent between classes esp: nobles vs. middle class/peasant Intellectuals – individuals speak out against the government Ideas - intellectual movements that conflict with the government develop. People want more.

Incubation

This stage in an illness is acquired, infecting them, but not yet causing any symptoms to present themselves. The sickness is developing and growing.
Symbolic actions – protest against the old regime Violence – small-scale, unorganized, temporary Planning – for a “spontaneous” revolt, movement is growing Taking Sides – groups develop, conservatives vs. liberals, loyalists vs. rebels, moderates vs. extremists. Middle Class – old regime loses support of this class Suppression – government tries but cannot suppress the rebellion Unrealistic Demands – made by the people of the govt.

symptomatic

This stage in an illness is when the sickness starts to affect the person in observable ways. Their temperature may rise. A cough is present. The individual might become weak & queasy.

crisis

War – full scale, organized, civil war, genocide, revenge, religious or anti-religious fervor. Economic Collapse – the country and both sides struggle to maintain economic prosperity.
This is the critical stage in an illness where two things can happen. Either the fever breaks after a heightened stage of illness or the individual gets progressively worse and dies.

convalescence

Order is Restored – radicals are eliminated, peace is restored Change Accomplished? – the goal of the revolution is accomplished in some format. Or Single Ruler – dictator, restores order, status quo
This stage involves recovering from the illness. The individual might be weakened from the experience, but he or she will eventually emerge healthy.
