ILa storia di questa popolazio ne risale a migliaia di anni fa come testimoniano le scritture rupestri trovate in Norvegia,ma essendo stata tramandata solo oralmente,le prime fonti scritte le troviamo nelle opere dell'autore Romano Tacito nel 98 d.C Erano pastori di renne che pagavano le tasse al re di Norvegia con le pellicce,ossa di balena e piume.

Guerra di Lapponia è il nome che viene generalmente dato alle ostilità tra la Finlandia e la Germania tra il settembre 1944 e l'aprile 1945 nell'ambito della seconda guerra mondiale..
All'inizio dell'estate del 1943, il comando tedesco iniziò a fare piani nell'eventualità che la Finlandia potesse giungere ad un accordo di pace separato con l'Unione Sovietica. I tedeschi progettavano di ritirare le loro truppe verso nord Durante l'inverno del 1943-1944, i tedeschi migliorarono le strade che andavano dalla Norvegia settentrionale alla Finlandia settentrionale, grazie all'uso intensivo del lavoro dei prigionieri di guerra.
Le forze tedesche comunque, devastarono ampie aree della Finlandia settentrionale impiegando la tattica della terra bruciata. Più di un terzo delle abitazioni dell'area vennero distrutte, e il capoluogo provinciale di Rovaniemi fu raso al suolo. In aggiunta alla perdita delle proprietà, stimate ad un equivalente di circa 300 milioni di dollari (del 1945), circa 100.000 abitanti divennero rifugiati, una situazione che si aggiunse ai problemi della ricostruzione del dopoguerra.I caduti tra i militari furono un numero relativamente limitato: 1.000 vite per le truppe finlandesi e circa 2.000 per i tedeschi.
