Main ICT

Information and Communications Technology (ICT): ICT encompasses digital technology for managing information efficiently and securely. It involves gathering, storing, processing, analyzing, and transmitting data. The term has been globally used since 1997, but in the UK, it was replaced with 'computing' in 2014.

ICT AND WORK

Edoardo Ponti && Riccardo Vaglio

ICT in the workplace brings changes in production, distribution, and entertainment sectors. New software enables collaboration and smart working, offering flexibility and productivity benefits. However, smart working also presents hazards like work-life balance issues. During the global pandemic, ICT facilitated business continuity, emphasizing its role in enabling remote work and global collaboration.

Is it really useful?

The environment has felt the impact of ICT in several ways. Positively, it has led to reduced mobility, decreased use of packaging and physical materials, and enabled monitoring of Earth's changes, including smart water and energy management. Conversely, negative impacts include high electricity consumption, generation of e-waste, tourism-related pollution, contributing to global warming, and increased paper waste.

What about environment? Is it really worth it?

ICT has significantly influenced education and culture by facilitating the dissemination of learning tools and enhancing their effectiveness. E-learning platforms have made learning more engaging and efficient. In classrooms, ICT encourages active participation, deepens understanding, provides real-life work experiences, boosts motivation, and cultivates technical skills.

In which circumstances and how?

ICT has various applications influencing daily life, particularly in health, offering both benefits and hazards. It promotes healthy living and enables medical advancements, enhancing healthcare efficiency with in-home and mobile technologies. However, it also poses health hazards like repetitive strain injury, eye strain, backache, stress, and obesity.
