FORM
-we put an infinitive without to after a modal verb-we do not add -s to modal verbs in the 3rd person singular (he, she, it) - we do not use do/ does/ did with modal verbs to form negatives, questions or short answers.
-ABILITY IN THE PRESENT (CAN, CAN'T) . I can swim very well. . We can't see you in the dark. -ABILITY IN THE PAST (COULD/ COULDN'T) . When I was 18, I could run 20 km in an hour. -REQUEST (CAN, COULD) . Can you repeat,please? . Could you open the door,please? (more polite) .
- PERMISSION (CAN, COULD, MAY)
.Can I leave? . May I speak, please? (more formal) .Could I use the computer, please? (more polite)
-POSSIBILITY (MAY, MIGHT)
. Mary may be sick. . It might rain tonight.(remote possibility)
