Sinking of Lusitania
A german submarine sunk the Lusitania, a ship, and this kickstarted the involment of the U.S. in WWI.

Secret diplomat communication between Mexico and Germany and Germany stated that if Mexico land a secret attack at the U.S. and they, thogether defeat them, they will give Mexico their lost land but Mexico refused and sent this to the U.S.
