In this unit we will learn (more) about animals, are you ready?
Vertebrate
Invertebrate
Before starting, what do you remember about animals classification?
Let's start with vertebrate animals
Vertebrate are those animals with an internal skeleton made up by many bones. They are divided into five different groups They can be viviparous or oviparous
They are classified into these five groups
Can you name two animals of each group?
Mammals
How are they?
Most of them are covered by fur
Most of them have tail
They have teeth and lips that use to suckle from their mothers
They have breasts. Females produce milk to feed their young (yes, even cetaceans)
They have limbs, which are different depending on where they live
Living style
Depending on what they eat, they can be:
Carnivorous: They eat other animals
Herbivorous: They eat plants and grass
Omnivorous: They eat both animals and plants
Most of them are viviparous
Thet ALL have lungs to breath
BIRDS
How are they?
They are covered by feathers To protect them from rain and cold
All of them have tail
They don't have teeth and their mouth is a beak
They have four limbs; two wings and two legs
Living style
Depending on what they eat, they can be:
Carnivorous: They eat other animals
Herbivorous: They eat plants and grass
Omnivorous: They eat both animals and plants
ALL of them are oviparous
They ALL have lungs to breath
Reptiles
How are they?
They are covered by scales
Some of them can lose their tail and it will grow again
Some of them also have a shell
Some of them have four legs, some others none
Living style
Most of them are carnivorous
They ALL have lungs to breath
They are oviparous (although they do not incubate or take care of the eggs)
Fish
How are they?
They are covered by scales
They have fins and tails to swim in the water
Living style
Most of them are carnivorous
They ALL have gills to breat h under the water
They are oviparous (although they do not incubate or take care of the eggs)
Amphibians
How are they?
They all have wet and bare skin
They have four limbs and some even have a tail
They have a long sticky tongue with to capture their food
Living style
All of them are carnivorous, although ....
They breath through their lungs and their skin (when it is wet)
They are oviparous, they lay the eggs in the water but do not incubate them
Most of them suffer a metamorphosis
Metamorphosis
It is the changes amphibians make from hatch to adultohood, because they are born in the water and in land when thay are aduts.
Review
Time to remeber
It is turn now for invetebrate animals
Invertebrates are boneless animals, it is, don't have bones. They are all oviparous They are classified in different groups
They are classified into these groups
Arthropods
They are separated into another classification; insects, aracnids and crustaceans
They have a protective outer skeleton and many jointed legs
Insects
How are they?
They are the largest group of arthropods
Their body is divided into three parts; head, thorax and abdomen
They ALL have antennas and 6 legs
Some of them have wings, some others don't
Some insects are, bees, flies, ants...
Arachnids
How are they?
Their body is divided into two parts; cephalothorax and abdomen
They ALL have 8 legs and no wings or antennas
Some aracnids are scorpions, spiders, ticks...
Crustaceans
How are they?
Their body is divided into two parts; cephalothorax and abdomen
They ALL have 10 legs, two antennas, but not wings
Some crustaceans are crabs, prawns..
Sponges
How are they?
They live fixed and inmobile in the bottom of the sea
Their body is full of pores (those are minute openings in a surface)
The water which is loaded with food substances, enters through those pores
Jellyfish
How are they?
They ALL live in the sea
Their body is jelly-like and bell-shaped
They have a mouth surrounded by venomous tentacles used to hunt and defend themselves
Echinoderms
How are they?
They can be starfish or urchins
Their body is covered with hard layers
They live in all parts of the ocean but mainly on the sea floor
Some are fiter feeders, but some others (Starfish) are preadators of moluscs
Worms
How are they?
They have a long soft body made up of rings and with no legs
They can live on the land (earthworms) or in the water
Mollusks
How are they?
They can be aquatic or terrestrial
They ALL have soft muscular bodies
ALMOST ALL have shells (can have one, two or be internal)
